This handbook provides a working knowledge of phosphate and black oxides coatings of ferrous metals as used by the Department of Defense for equipment and ordnance. It is not intended to be an exhaustive treatise on the subject, but rather to furnish detailed information on phosphate and black oxide coatings that have proved satisfactory in service. It is intended to supplement, but not replace, various specifications and standards covering these coatings.
