MIL MIL-HDBK-62 – Documentation of Digital Electronic Systems with VHDL

MIL-HDBK-62 Use of VHDL to model military digital electronic systemsis described in this handbook. In particular, this handbookaddresses the development of models compliant with theVHDL DID (Ref. 2) and MIL-HDBK-454 (Ref. 1). Digitalelectronics are only part of most military systems. Mostmodern weapons platforms use sensors and actuators thatare tightly coupled with the digital electronic systems; however, the modeling of these sensors and actuators is outsidethe scope of this handbook. Many military electronic systemshave both digital and analog components. The modelingof only the digital components is discussed in thishandbook. Researchers are currently exploring the use ofVHDL for analog components and considering changes tothe language to allow VHDL to better support modeling ofanalog and hybrid components and subsystems. AlthoughVHDL models are frequently used to provide test beds fortesting software before the hardware is fabricated, this handbookdoes not discuss the issues of developing tests for software.

The handbook is not intended to provide a workingknowledge of VHDL. On the other hand, the handbook introducesVHDL terms and concepts so it can serve as astand-alone reference document for readers familiar withVHDL.
